The Surprisingly Powerful Heat Output of Bio-Ethanol Fires — What Most People Don't Know

by Ignis Living on May 29, 2026

Ask most people what they think a bio-ethanol fire is for, and they will say atmosphere. Ambience. A nice flame to look at. What they almost certainly will not say is serious home heating — and that is a significant misunderstanding that costs many buyers the chance to own one of the most effective, flexible, and beautiful heating solutions available.

The truth is that bio-ethanol cassette fires can produce genuinely impressive heat output. Our largest Ignis Smart Bio-Ethanol Cassette Fire delivers 14.9kW — enough to heat a space of over 130 square metres. That is not decorative heat. That is primary heating territory.

Here is what most people do not know about bio-ethanol heat output, and why it matters when choosing the right fire for your home.

How Bio-Ethanol Produces Heat

Bio-ethanol is a clean-burning alcohol fuel derived from plant matter — typically sugarcane, corn, or wheat. When combusted, it produces heat, water vapour, and a small amount of carbon dioxide. There is no soot, no smoke, no particulates, and no toxic byproducts at normal operating conditions.

Crucially, because bio-ethanol combustion is highly efficient and produces no waste gases that need to be vented, virtually all of the energy produced by combustion enters the room as usable heat. There is no flue carrying heat away up a chimney as there is with a gas or solid fuel fire. This makes bio-ethanol one of the most thermally efficient real-flame heating options available.

The Numbers: Ignis Smart Bio-Ethanol Cassette Fire Heat Output by Size

Here is the full heat output data for the Ignis Smart Bio-Ethanol Cassette Fire range, along with the approximate room size each model is capable of heating:

  • 18" / 450mm — 3.3kW — heats up to 33m²
  • 24" / 600mm — 4.8kW — heats up to 60m²
  • 30" / 750mm — 6.0kW — heats up to 73m²
  • 36" / 900mm — 8.6kW — heats up to 90m²
  • 48" / 1220mm — 10.7kW — heats up to 98m²
  • 60" / 1500mm — 11.7kW — heats up to 115m²
  • 71" / 1800mm — 14.9kW — heats up to 131m²
  • 83" / 2100mm — 14.9kW — heats up to 131m²

To put these numbers in context: a modern gas fire typically outputs between 3kW and 6kW. A standard electric panel heater outputs 1.5kW to 2kW. Even our smallest bio-ethanol model at 3.3kW outperforms a typical electric heater, and our mid-range 36" model at 8.6kW delivers more heat than most gas fires on the market.

Why Don't More People Know This?

The bio-ethanol fire market has historically positioned itself almost entirely around aesthetics — beautiful flames, clean lines, architectural design. Heat output has rarely been the headline. This has created a widespread perception that bio-ethanol fires are decorative appliances that happen to produce a little warmth, rather than serious heating solutions that also look exceptional.

The reality is that a well-sized bio-ethanol cassette fire can serve as the primary heat source for a living room, open-plan kitchen diner, or even a large studio space — while delivering a visual impact that no conventional radiator, underfloor heating circuit, or gas fire can match.

Adjustable Output — You Are in Control

One of the practical advantages of the Ignis Smart Bio-Ethanol Cassette Fire is that heat output is fully adjustable via remote control or WiFi app. You are not locked into maximum output whenever the fire is on. You can dial the flame — and therefore the heat — up or down to suit the conditions, the room temperature, and your preference.

On a mild autumn evening, a lower flame setting gives you the visual warmth of a real fire without overheating the room. On a cold winter night, full output from a 48" or larger model will maintain a comfortable temperature in a well-insulated open-plan space with no supplementary heating required.

Running Costs and Fuel Efficiency

Bio-ethanol fuel costs vary depending on supplier and quantity, but premium bio-ethanol typically costs between £1.50 and £2.50 per litre. Consumption depends on the flame setting and the size of the fire — a mid-range setting on a 36" model might consume approximately 0.3 to 0.5 litres per hour.

At these figures, running a bio-ethanol fire for an evening is broadly comparable in cost to running a gas fire for the same period — but with no flue installation cost, no annual servicing requirement, no Gas Safe engineer, and no gas connection required.

For properties that are off the gas grid — a significant proportion of rural UK homes — bio-ethanol is a particularly compelling option. Real flame, substantial heat output, no infrastructure requirements, and a running cost that competes comfortably with LPG or oil heating.

The 100% Efficiency Advantage

A conventional gas fire with a flue loses a proportion of its heat output up the chimney — typically 20% to 40% depending on the appliance and flue type. A solid fuel fire loses even more. An unlined masonry chimney on an open fire can lose over 80% of the heat generated to the flue.

A bio-ethanol fire loses none. Because there is no flue, 100% of the thermal energy produced by combustion enters the room. This means that the stated kW output figures for bio-ethanol fires are net figures — the heat you actually receive in the room — not gross figures from which flue losses must be deducted. For gas and solid fuel, the stated output is often the gross figure before losses.

Is a Bio-Ethanol Fire Right for Your Heating Needs?

Bio-ethanol is an excellent primary or supplementary heat source for rooms that are:

  • Well insulated (modern construction or retrofitted insulation)
  • Not excessively large or draughty
  • Open plan spaces where a statement fire makes design sense
  • Off-grid or without gas connection
  • In properties where flue installation is impractical or undesirable

For very large or poorly insulated spaces, a bio-ethanol fire works best as a supplementary heat source alongside underfloor heating or a central heating system — providing the atmosphere and a significant proportion of the heat, with the background system maintaining a base temperature.

Choosing the Right Size

The simplest rule of thumb for sizing is to match the heat output to your room volume. As a guide, you need approximately 1kW of heat output per 10m² of floor area in a well-insulated room with a standard ceiling height. For rooms with high ceilings, large glazing, or older construction, increase this allowance accordingly.

Use the size specifications on each Ignis Smart Bio-Ethanol Cassette Fire product page — all minimum firebox opening dimensions are listed, making it straightforward to size your fire and plan your installation in one step.

Intelligent Fire. Real Heat.

The Ignis Smart Bio-Ethanol Cassette Fire range delivers something no electric fire can — a genuine, living flame that produces substantial, adjustable, room-filling heat, with no chimney, no gas, and no compromise on design.
